In Porto Cervo, the car isn't transport — it's part of the dress code. The village Prince Karim Aga Khan willed into being is built like a theatre: the Piazzetta above, the boutique level beneath it, the old harbour below where megayachts light up the quay on summer evenings. And you make your entrance driving. The descent towards the harbour with the engine burbling on the downshift, the arrival outside the restaurant, the glances from the tables — it's a small ritual that has played out here for decades, and it deserves the right car.

But Porto Cervo is more than a stage. The village itself is tiny, and everything that makes it special lies five, ten, fifteen minutes of curves away: the twin Pevero beaches, the golf course threaded between the bays, the coves towards Romazzino, the granite hinterland of Arzachena. Without a car, you're confined to one beautiful square kilometre; with the right one, every run out of the village becomes the best part of the day.

From Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport to Porto Cervo it's 30 kilometres, around 45 minutes: you leave the city traffic behind, head for Arzachena and finish with the finest stretch of all — the descent to the sea between granite boulders and junipers. You can take delivery at arrivals and get straight behind the wheel, or — the formula most guests staying here prefer — have the car waiting at your destination: at the hotel reception, at your villa gates in Pevero, or quayside at Marina di Porto Cervo if you arrive by sea.

Everything is coordinated through your WhatsApp concierge: flight number or yacht name, address, timing. The Piazzetta remains the starting point: arrive in the late afternoon, when the boutiques reopen and the tables fill up, and watch the comings and goings from the parapet overlooking the old harbour. Then get in the car. First stop, Grande Pevero: five minutes of curves above the golf course, easy parking, and a crescent of powder-fine sand where the water stays shallow and turquoise for dozens of metres. The moment to go is morning, before the bay fills with tenders.

Golfers will find one of the Mediterranean's most scenic courses here: Pevero Golf Club, eighteen holes by Robert Trent Jones laid out between Pevero bay and Cala di Volpe, with fairways set into granite and maquis. On the same road, the church of Stella Maris deserves a stop: white, soft-edged, designed by Michele Busiri Vici, it houses a Mater Dolorosa attributed to El Greco — and at sunset it frames the harbour like a natural belvedere.

For proper driving, two directions. South lies the beach road towards Spiaggia del Principe and Romazzino, best taken at nine in the morning when the tarmac is empty and the sea is just catching the light. North runs the coastal road to Baja Sardinia and the fjord of Poltu Quatu: a succession of rises and dips with the La Maddalena archipelago on the horizon, lay-bys to pull over, and the return to the village along the SP59 — which saves its finest version for dusk.

There's an unwritten rule here: the car gets looked at. A Lamborghini Huracán is the choice that never misses between the Piazzetta and the old harbour — compact enough for the village lanes, theatrical enough to stop conversation at the tables. For elegant evenings, an open-top Rolls-Royce Dawn turns the drive to dinner into a silent procession.
