What makes Alghero such a natural base for drivers?
Alghero is the only city in Sardinia where you watch the sunset from Catalan ramparts. L'Alguer still speaks the language of Barcelona in the lanes of its old town, still works red coral in the workshops beneath the cathedral, and lives all year round rather than only in the beach months: restaurants open in November, genuine markets, a seafront promenade that fills with locals in the evening. It is a city with character, not a summer film set — and that changes the way you move around it.
Above all, Alghero sits at a crossroads of roads that deserve a proper car: to the north, the SP55 running out to Porto Conte and the cliffs of Capo Caccia; to the south, the coast road to Bosa that many consider the most beautiful in Italy; all around, beaches and pine groves scattered along kilometres of shoreline. From here every destination is a short, spectacular drive — the transfer stops being dead time and becomes the reason you came.
How does delivery in Alghero work?
Alghero Fertilia Airport is 11 km from the centre, around 20 minutes by road — one of the quickest airport-to-city pairings we serve in Sardinia. You can collect the car the moment you land and arrive in town already at the wheel, or give us the address of your seafront hotel, your villa between Fertilia and Porto Conte or your residence near Le Bombarde: we bring the car to your door, at whatever time suits you.
Guests arriving by sea find the same service at the Port of Alghero, with the car waiting on the quay a few steps from their berth. One useful note: the old town is largely pedestrianised, so we always set the meeting point at the edge of the walls, where you can load up and leave without wasted manoeuvring. Everything is settled in advance with our WhatsApp concierge or through the enquiry form; requirements and conditions are provided at the quotation stage. And with 27 destinations and 3 airports served across the island, collecting here and dropping off in Olbia or Cagliari can be arranged in the same conversation.
Which roads and experiences truly capture the Riviera del Corallo?
Put the SP105 Alghero–Bosa at the top of the list: some forty kilometres carved into the cliff face, with not a single town along the way and the sea below your right-hand door from start to finish. The corners are wide and easy to read, the asphalt flows, and halfway along it is worth stopping at the Torre Argentina to look back over the coastline you have just driven. Glance upwards as you pass Capo Marrargiu: the griffon vultures nesting on these walls are among the last in Italy, and watching one glide over your bonnet is the kind of moment that stays with you. The reward at the end is Bosa, its coloured houses mirrored in the River Temo beneath the Malaspina Castle.
On the other side of the bay, the SP55 traces the shore of Porto Conte and climbs towards Capo Caccia: the lookout over the Foradada island is the postcard view of the north-west, and from there the Escala del Cabirol begins — 654 steps cut into the rock, descending to Neptune's Grotto. If your legs would rather not, the caves can also be reached by boat from Alghero's harbour. On the way back, the Porto Conte Natural Park rewards a slow detour through pine woods and holm oaks to the Prigionette reserve, where fallow deer and small wild horses graze by the track.
For the sea itself, Le Bombarde is the signature beach — pale sand and turquoise shallows ten minutes or so from the centre — while Maria Pia, with its juniper-covered dunes, begins more or less where the city ends: perfect for a quick swim before aperitivo. In the evening there is only one ritual: a stroll along the Marco Polo bastions, one coral atelier after another, and a table where you order lobster alla catalana while the harbour lights come on.
Which car between bastions and cliffs?
The Bosa coast road wants a car that converses with its corners: a Porsche 911 Carrera is the perfect instrument — precise through the changes of direction and compact enough to relish even the tightest stretches above the cliff. If your taste runs to grand-touring elegance — a sleek coupé, a smooth V8, real presence outside the seafront hotels — the Ferrari Roma is the ideal companion; to compare every available car from Maranello in the area, see our dedicated page on Ferrari rental in Alghero.
Travelling as a four, with luggage and days split between Porto Conte, the beaches and the wineries inland, an Aston Martin DBX combines genuine space with a chassis unfazed by the back roads of the Nurra. And if you want to understand why the Alghero–Bosa appears on every list, we tell its story in our guide to the most beautiful roads in Sardinia to drive in a supercar. Once you have chosen, a single message is all it takes: check availability with our WhatsApp concierge.
